Contact Lens Image

Contact lenses are a viable alternative to glasses for many patients.  Here at Mira Mesa Optometry, we offer a wide array of contact lens services and management to meet your particular needs.  After your comprehensive eye and vision evaluation, our doctors will discuss the variety of contact lens options with you to select the type that best fits your vision needs and lifestyle.  Our doctors are experienced with fitting all types of lenses that range from simple corrections to specialty customized contacts.

Evaluation

Along with determining your correction with a thorough eye examination, a corneal topographer is used to provide the doctors with a map of your cornea.  This instrument obtains accurate corneal curvature measurements that are needed to ensure the lenses will properly fit.  The topographer is also useful for screening and detecting corneal conditions or degenerations that may require special attention.  Your eyes will also be assessed for any other variables that could affect your success such dryness, lid disorders or conditions, allergies and overall corneal health.

Our doctors will then discuss their findings and review the types of options that are available to you. During the fitting process, the lenses are evaluated and the prescription is checked to be sure you are obtaining maximum results.  Training for new wearers is implemented and follow up visits are then provided to confirm that the lenses are performing to your satisfaction. The amount of follow ups will vary depending on the case.

Correcting your eyes with Contact Lenses

Various factors can affect whether or not you are successful with contact lenses and it's imperative that the right choice is made for your particular needs.  Our doctors work closely with you to determine whether contact lenses or glasses are best for your lifestyle. Contact lenses are available in either soft or rigid gas permeable form. Many patients now use disposable modalities and the frequency of discarding them will depend on the lens used.  The most common types are daily disposable, bi-weekly or monthly.

There are now options for those patients who are experiencing a condition called presbyopia which causes problems when reading at near.  This tends to occur in your mid-40s and slowly progresses with age.  Advances in multifocal lenses have made contacts a possibility for many of these patients and are now available in disposable modalities too.  Ask to see if this may be a solution for you at your next visit.

Cosmetic Lenses

Contact lenses can be fun way to add some color to your eyes.  A variety of natural looking designs are available to transform your eye color and they come in both daily and bi-weekly disposables.    Unfortunately many cosmetic/theatrical lenses are now available through various sources on-line and patients should beware because these could potentially create problems if not properly evaluated or fitted.  Call us at (858)566-6670 and speak to our knowledgeable staff if you are interested in modifying or changing your eye color with contact lenses.

SPECIALTY CONTACT LENSES

Conditions such as keratoconus, marginal degenerations, post-operative transplants can make it particularly difficult to wear glasses.  If contact lenses are going to be an option, however, all these conditions will require special attention and expertise to successfully manage.  There are lenses available that are specifically designed to fit the unique requirements for such patients and our doctors our experienced with handling these cases.  We are knowledgeable with fitting hybrid, scleral and many other types of specialty gas permeable lenses.  We work with high quality labs and materials to give the patient best chance at incorporating contacts into their daily routine.
